Not even the slightest bit of green. In fact, I think I have the opposite of green, perhaps a red thumb or even a black one. Every plant I’ve ever had (save one – a succulent that needs little care whatsoever) has died. I either forget to water them or some strange fungus appears or bugs invade or whatever. I’ve never had much success in the world of botany. That being said, I do like gardening and I especially like growing my own vegetables. As part of my Mother’s Day gift from Ap and Er, I started container gardening on our back deck. Container gardening works for me because I feel like I have more control over the growing/harvesting process and I don’t have to worry about rabbits, deer, or groundhogs. I’ve grown some veggies in the past with a little success, but at the time, I really had no idea what I was doing. I just dove right in and prayed for a miracle. This time around, I did my research and planned out my gardening.

First of all, the types of containers you use is important, as well as, the size. I decided to go with plastic containers mainly because I had several of these already and because they are lightweight. Apparently, clay pots are not the best since they soak up moisture and can dry out your plants. Glazed pots are beautiful, but tend to be expensive. Wooden containers are a good option, but you need to make sure they aren’t treated and not too heavy once wet. For me, it is important that I be able to move my containers should they need more/less sun/shade. Plastic is a lightweight, durable, less-expensive option. (I’m not thrilled about using plastic since it’s this evil material that doesn’t decompose, but I am reusing pots that I’ve had stored in our shed instead of buying new, so I hope that counts for something.) With sizing, I found that going larger than the suggested depth is better, giving your plant extra room and more soil to pull energy from. The reason my garden wasn’t as productive in years past is because I had containers that were just too small.

Once I had my containers picked out and earmarked, I then focused on soil. I went with an organic potting mix because soil is key, especially with container gardening. I mixed in organic plant food to pump up the nutrients. Throughout the growing season, I will be adding organic liquid feed (fish fertilizer) every few weeks to help the plants grow to their fullest potential. The plants I chose to grow are: zucchini, tomato, pepper, lettuce, basil, parsley, and oregano. I did seedlings for all of these except the lettuce. However, lettuce is fairly easy to start. You simply sprinkle the seeds over moist soil and let nature do its thing. (Please excuse all the debris you see on our deck. We’ve had rainstorms the past few days…)

Lastly, I made upcycled labels for my pots so that I know what is what. (Once the plants begin producing fruit, it will be pretty obvious.) For the posts, I used barbecue skewers and chopsticks that I found in the back of one of our kitchen drawers. I used old wine corks for the label part. This was a simple process (I just wedged the corks on) and I’m happy with the way they turned out. You can also do this using wooden dowels and a hand drill if necessary. Now, I’m at the stage of monitoring plant growth, watering soil, and checking for early fruit. I like knowing that I was able to help these tiny seedlings grow in healthy soil without the use of herbicides or pesticides. I’m so excited to be growing some of the vegetables that my family will eat. It’s refreshing to head out to the backyard and grab some delicious food for our table. You really can’t get any more local than that!

I’m not suggesting that I didn’t before, it’s just that this year it really means more. My first Mother’s Day was last year. The girls were only 2 months old at the time and we were as they say “in the thick of it.” Running short on sleep, we were just figuring out this whole parenting thing and surviving from one day to the next. I was excited to be a Mommy on Mother’s Day, but I was somewhat overwhelmed at the time and couldn’t really soak it in. Now, with 14 months under my belt, I truly understand the significance of today. We moms are incredible. We deserve this day of recognition and appreciation. We provide the meals, clean the clothes, wash the diapers, fix the toys, wipe the boogies, soothe the boo-boo’s, wrap the presents, pack the diaper bags, read the books, create the schedules, and maintain the households, all the while with smiles on our faces and songs in our hearts. It’s nice to have Mother’s Day to take the time to reflect on all that we do to keep our families healthy, safe, and happy. We make the lives of those we love our #1 priority. Today, let’s really celebrate all of our hard work, endless dedication, and unconditional love by acknowledging what it truly means to hold that extra special title of Mom. We’ve earned it.

So today’s post is really a double category one (Product Plug and Getting Greener). However, for all intensive purposes, I’ll be hanging the Greener label on it. I’m a big fan of tea these days. I do drink coffee now and again, but tea is for me. I like all different types of tea: peach, blueberry, Tahitian vanilla hazelnut, etc. Lately, I’ve been indulging in mint tea. I find mint very refreshing at all hours of the day/night (as evidenced not only by my latest batch of tea bags, but also by my devotion to Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castile Soap). I highly recommend Numi Organic Moroccan Mint Tea. It is easily one of the best teas I’ve ever had. I love knowing that it’s organic, fair trade, and uses non-GMO packaging. Its inviting aroma only hints at its truly divine taste. It may be on the pricier side, especially if you are used to buying larger quantity boxes of ordinary tea, but I can assure you that it’s worth every cent. So, now let’s say you drink a lot of tea, like me, and you think, hmm…it seems a little wasteful to be chucking all those tea bags, especially if they have a bigger price tag. Well, I have some solutions for you about how to get extra life out of your tea bags. I recently happened upon this article on Treehugger.com and was amazed at all the ways to reuse these sweet little morsels of flavor (along with coffee grounds). I wish I would have known about using tea bags on bug bites and stings last week when I was mightily stung by an angry hornet in our bedroom. (I love nature, but keep it out of the bedroom.) I also love the idea of using tea bags in potted plants to retain water and in the fridge to absorb odors. I went on to read this and was smitten with the idea of using tea bags to relieve razor burn or soaking my tired footsies in a tea bath. Here I liked the suggestions of using tea bags to break down grease on pots and bringing out the shine of wooden furniture. Just thought I’d share some of this useful knowledge with other tea drinkers out there. So, steep your tea, enjoy each drop, and then reuse your bag. Perfecto!
