A Playful, Earth-Conscious Resource For Your "Ing" Journey

Homemade Deodorants

I’m loving the homemade, all-natural, I-know-what’s-in-it beauty recipes these days. I really want to switch up the deodorant I’ve been using since I know so many over-the-counter ones have many chemicals and compounds in them that just shouldn’t be put on to and absorbed by the skin. (ie. aluminum) I began looking up some ways to do this online, and found this great idea at The Pistachio Project. I think the recipe sounds easy enough and I like the idea of using an old deodorant container. If you peruse The Pistachio Project, you’ll find loads of other great ideas, from cloth diapering to uses for coconut oil to how to cut down on the chlorine in your tap water. It’s a fun, fabulous resource that I hope you can check out. Back to homemade deodorants. There are other suggestions here (I like the thought of using tea tree oil or lavender oil in the mix) and here (This recipe does not include cornstarch or baking soda, which some people have found to cause rashes). I’m looking forward to no longer having to purchase my deodorant at the store. I’m tired of the unpronounceable ingredients or products that don’t work. (I tried Tom’s of Maine and I really wanted to like it, but I stunk!) Here’s to sweet smelling armpits with better ingredients and a cheaper price!

Embrace Change

2012…a new year has begun. I’ve decided to change things up a bit on buckbuckgoose to make it a little easier for me to update. Instead of doing Book Blurbs on Mondays, I will add those whenever I feel inclined. Being locked in to a specific day was stressing me out entirely too much and I didn’t want writing about books to become a chore since I love recommending literature. Also, the Looking Local category will no longer include weekly Weekend What To Do’s. It took a large amount of time to post those. However, I will put up an event or two if something comes along that seems very interesting or is particularly “green.”

You may also notice some other differences as I venture into the new year as a blogger. It’s important for me to be able to have my own little voice on here, but it also has to work within the confines of my every day life. As my two little ones develop and grow, so too, does my life and my role as a mother. With each passing month and every achieved milestone, what I’ve come to know as my daily routine begins to change. I realize that in order to survive and thrive, I need to embrace change and simply allow life to unfold. Nothing ever really stays the same so we adjust, adapt, and adopt. I guess this blog is a way for me to document that process and serves to remind me that I can do this. I can live this life and I can live it spectacularly and share it with you along the way. Cheers to a new year!

Happy Holidays!

So this time of year, although special and exciting, is also very hectic and busy. With all the extra activities crammed into our days (shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating…) it has been challenging for me to update this blog. I will make every effort to hop on here when I can in the next few weeks. I truly love writing on here, however, now that Baby Ap and Baby Er are more mobile and sleeping less, finding an opportunity to do so has been a little difficult. That being said, I did want to wish all of the buckbuckgoose readers a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May the magic of this season warm your heart and may 2012 be a year to remember!

Treeless Toilet Paper

So I never thought I’d be blogging about toilet paper but, today, I’m doing just that. I recently purchased 100% treeless toilet paper from Shop Rite by Green2. (I don’t know if other grocery stores carry it, but I know Shop Rite does.) I was skeptical about it at first, so I only purchased two single rolls. I was concerned about the quality of the paper and wanted to play on the safe side. Well, I’m happy to report that the toilet paper turned out to be great! It is made from bamboo and sugar cane husk. Green2′s toilet paper is very soft and of good quality. *If you aren’t crazy about single ply, then it might not be for you. We have always used single ply to keep plumbing issues at bay.* After using the single rolls, I went ahead and snagged a pack of several. When I did, there were a few other shoppers around and I was so ecstatic to hear them comment: “Wow. Treeless toilet paper!” as I walked away. I can only hope that maybe my purchasing decision influenced someone else. If you want to see the product, I found it here and here. You can also find paper towels, paper plates, and napkins all made from recycled paper. If you happen to be in the paper products aisle and don’t know whether or not to give treeless stuff a try, I’d say go for it!  The trees will thank you for it!

Snowmen At Christmas

This week’s Book Blurb is another great book for the holidays. It is called Snowmen at Christmas by Caralyn Buehner. I read this book for the first time when I was a Kindergarten teacher. I absolutely love the illustrations! The rhyming throughout the book makes the text even more fun to read. What I like most about Snowmen at Christmas is how it encourages children to think about what snow people might do on the special day. The companion book to this, Snowmen at Night, also follows this theme of showcasing just what happens when we all go to bed on snowy, winter nights. Adult and children readers alike will thoroughly enjoy this book. I know I did, and so did my students. Baby Ap and Baby Er will surely want to read this one over and over again.
